Day One Of Warped Tour, Live From Pomona, CA

The Yahoo Live webcast of VWT's June 19 show
BY LIV SLABY

While thousands of teenagers poured into Pomona's Fairplex under the hot California sun, thousands more watched from behind their computer screens. The Vans Warped Tour Webcast, streamed through Yahoo Live, let fans watch over 30 bands perform on June 19. I was able to see a majority of those bands, but alas, I was not able to spend my entire day in bed with my laptop. However, a few artists really stuck out to me and influenced who I will be seeing at Warped Tour in Chicago.

Despite having one of the earliest times, Beartooth delivered a passionate and fiery performance. They poured every ounce of energy they had into getting the crowd riled up and giving their rage-fueled, intense songs the power they deserved. The crowd responded just as energetically, starting mosh pit after mosh pit and kicking up enough dust to create a permanent haze in the air. Hopefully Beartooth doesn't lose their fire as the tour goes on, but I doubt they will.

What else could be expected from Attila except absolute madness. The partycore band created an atmosphere of absolute craziness and a "party hard, destroy everything" mentality that drove the audience wild. The energy that the band created and shared with the audience made me wish I was there in one of the huge mosh pits or circle pits. Bonus points: they had huge red solo cups the size of trash cans on stage with them.

Even though Beartooth and Attila where amazing, Set It Off were by far the best performers I saw all day. They brought the sound of summer with them in a theatrical performance filled with youthful energy. In addition to sounding incredible live, the band also frequently interacted with the audience. Cody Carson, lead singer, could be seen crowdsurfing and stepping out onto the audience's hands, as well as telling the crowd to follow him back to the band's tent after their set by jumping into the audience and carrying a flag emblazoned with Set It Off's logo. Seeing their performance quickly moved the band to the top of my Warped Tour priority list.

The livestream was a great opportunity for those who can't go to Warped this year to experience it, and a sneak peek for those who are attending at later dates.

You can watch the livestream here, but it will expire in a few days. Hopefully it will be posted on YouTube soon! Also check out Beartooth, Attila and Set It Off if you don't know them already, and check out the VWT site for the full set list and tickets.

The Ultimate Warped Tour Survival Guide

LIV SLABY

It's that time of year again: the sun is shining, birds are chirping, and Warped Tour kicks off in a few days. Alternative music's longest, biggest, and hottest music festival is back, and it's guaranteed to be one of the best days of your summer - provided you don't pass out, wear jeans and long sleeves, or forget your ticket. To ensure that Warped Tour rocks your summer, here's a guide to help you make it your best day ever.

BEFORE WARPED TOUR

Warped Tour 2013 by Brittany Lee
  • Buy tickets early for the best deal. I got mine in November for $25. However, it's okay to wait till the last minute if you're cool with paying more, because Warped usually never sells out.
  • Figure out who's going with you. My advice is to go with one or two people who plan to see the same bands as you, because otherwise it's a lot of compromise and you could waste time arguing over which bands to see. Either plan out the bands you're going to see beforehand or go alone and plan to meet people there to see different bands.
  • Think about signing up for a TEI workshop. If you have a passion for music, why not learn from the people you admire? I signed up for two of these this year and I'm pretty sure I won't regret it!
THE NIGHT BEFORE
  • Pack your bag. Here's a list of the basics that you'll need, but you can bring more (just don't bring too much stuff, you'll be carrying it around all day!)
    • Put a water bottle in the freezer (either bring an unopened water bottle or an empty reusable one, they have stations where you can fill it up)
    • A sling bag or a small backpack
    • Your ticket
    • Venue directions
    • Fully charged phone or a disposable camera
    • Money for merch, a set list, and food (bring a couple twenties and some ones)
    • Sunglasses and sunscreen
    • Chapstick
    • A pen
    • Hair ties if you have long hair
    • A poncho/rain jacket if you think it's going to rain
    • A sack lunch or snack
  • Set out your outfit. I know you want to look super awesome for when you meet your favorite band member, but comfort comes before beauty in this case. Wear close toed shoes and double knot the laces, don't wear jewelry, wear shorts and a tank top/t-shirt, pull your hair back if it's long, and try to wear minimal makeup. You can wear your swimsuit underneath your clothes because they have a slip-n-side! Warped Tour always seems to end up being the hottest day of the summer, so prepare to sweat a lot and dress accordingly!
  • Go to bed early and start drinking lots of water. Hydrating beforehand works, and you'll need it because you have a very long and hot day in front of you!
THE MORNING OF
  • Eat a healthy and substantial breakfast. You've gotta get fueled up for a long day of moshing!
  • Apply lots of sunscreen. Yes, ten hours in the sun WILL give you a sunburn.
  • Leave on time so you're there when the gates open.
AT WARPED TOUR
Warped Tour 2013
  • Buy a setlist. This is where your one dollar bills come in handy. Set lists are two dollars and, well, you kinda need one to find out when everyone is playing.
  • Try to see at least one artist you don't know. Some of the bands I've seen at Warped Tour have been the bands I end up seeing three times that year. After all, finding awesome new music is what Warped Tour's all about!
  • Drink a lot of water and reapply your sunscreen!!
  • Don't get caught up on meeting bands. In my opinion, seeing the band play is way better than meeting them. It's totally cool to meet a couple bands, but if you spend all your time waiting in signing lines, you're gonna miss all the music!
  • Make new friends! Warped Tour is a place where everyone's a misfit, so you'll be appreciated for all your weirdness.
You're ready to have a blast at Warped Tour this summer! Party hard but don't forget to chill out and take a breath sometimes. Make the most out of this amazing thing we have called Warped Tour: it's misfit summer camp for us as much as it is for the bands.

Bands to Watch: Speak Low If You Speak Love

Pop-punk bassist goes indie rock
BY LIV SLABY

You might not know who Ryan Scott Graham is, but you probably know the band he plays bass in, as it is none other than State Champs. Although State Champs is defined by a clear, upbeat and stereotypically pop punk sound, Graham's solo project Speak Low If You Speak Love is the polar opposite. Self-described as "emotional indie rock", Speak Low If You Speak Love brings a fresh sound to the acoustic scene.

Final Warped Tour Announcement

And will The World Tour go on?
by Marielou Obdeijn

Sleeping With Sirens and Pierce The Veil
The last band to join the Vans Warped Tour has been announced, and to the delight of many, it is none other than Pierce The Veil.
This band certainly has a background with the Vans Warped Tour, having played it for the first time in 2008, then in 2010 and 2012, and now, in 2015. Now, many of Pierce The Veil’s fans are asking themselves is: What will happen with The World Tour?
With Sleeping With Sirens announcing a new headlining acoustic tour, and Pierce the Veil joining the Warped lineup, many are questioning if the tour will go on.
Now both bands have toured the USA, the UK and a part of Europe together, and although their travels are extensive, they don't add up to the promised World Tour. Nothing has been said about the matter yet, but we'll update this article as the story progresses.

Of course Pierce the Veil isn’t the only band playing Warped this summer. Some other bands you can catch there include Asking Alexandria, Atilla, August Burns Red, Black Veil Brides, Memphis May Fire, As It Is, The Wonder Years, Neck Deep, PVRIS, and many more. Check out the Vans Warped Tour artist page for a full list.
Jarrod Alonge

In addition to Pierce the Veil, there’s also a new YouTuber added to the lineup. Alongside BryanStars, Damon Fizzy, Austin Jones, Johnnie Guilbert and Jordan Sweeto, you can now also see Jarrod Alonge on the tour as Fearless Records' pit reporter.

You can buy tickets for The Vans Warped Tour here.

Let us know if you are going to Warped Tour this summer and which bands you are planning to check out!
